Collaborative Discussion 2 Reflection
This post is part of the Collaborative Discussion 2 assignment for the Intelligent Agents module.
This post reflects on my initial post, my two peer responses, and the summary post for the second collaborative discussion on agent communication languages.
Initial Post Reflection
Looking back, I think my initial post was stronger than a basic discussion-board answer because it offered a clear analytical frame rather than just listing advantages and disadvantages. The strongest part was probably the description of KQML as an “outer language”, because that captured the separation between communicative intent and domain content in a concise way. I also think the comparison with method invocation was generally effective, especially where I linked it to RPC-style assumptions, shared interfaces, retries, and partial failures. That gave the post a more technical and applied character, rather than treating ACLs only as abstract AI theory.
However, the post also had some clear weaknesses. The contrast between KQML and method invocation was slightly too absolute. In practice, the discussion later exposed that KQML does not replace APIs so much as operate at a different layer, and I did not make that distinction clearly enough in the original post. Because of that, the argument risked sounding more binary than it should have. I also think my closing point about recent natural-language-based agent protocols was too speculative. I suggested that newer approaches may have dealt with some of KQML’s weaknesses, but I did not really support that claim, and in hindsight it overstated the case. A more careful argument would have said that newer protocols change the nature of the communication problem rather than solving it outright.
Another limitation is that, although the post was conceptually strong, it did not fully unpack the hardest practical problem in ACLs. I identified ontology alignment and semantic dependence, but I did not yet say enough about the deeper issue of operational verification. It is one thing to define performatives in theory and another to ensure that independently developed agents interpret and enact them consistently in practice. If I were rewriting the post, I would keep the core framing, but I would be more precise about system layering, more cautious about claims regarding newer NLP-based protocols, and more explicit about the gap between formal communication theory and enforceable implementation.
Peer Response Reflection: Richárd Szépi
I think my response to Richárd was constructive and added real value to the discussion. His contribution was useful because it shifted the focus from message format to meaning, particularly the idea that many failures in ACL-based systems come from mismatched assumptions about content and intent rather than from the existence of an ACL itself. My reply built well on that point by moving from general theory into practical design implications, such as treating ontologies and conversation policies as versioned, testable artefacts and using explicit protocol specifications. That made the exchange more concrete and showed stronger engagement with engineering practice, which I think was one of the better aspects of my participation in this discussion.
At the same time, I can see that my reply was more additive than critical. I largely accepted the argument and extended it, but I did not challenge it enough. There was room to push further on whether ambiguity in ACLs is simply a governance problem or whether it reflects a deeper limitation in speech-act-based semantics. My response implied that better testing, monitoring, and protocol design could largely manage the issue, but that may be too optimistic. Some of the difficulty lies in the fact that performatives often depend on assumptions about internal mental states that are difficult to verify in real systems. I did not draw that distinction sharply enough.
I also think the response became slightly too dense for the format. The points about conformance testing, state machines, and commitment-based interaction were relevant, but they pushed the reply toward a mini technical note rather than a concise academic exchange. If I were improving it, I would keep the practical suggestions, but I would reduce the number of them and devote more space to directly evaluating the strength of the original claim. That would make the response feel more reflective and less like an appended design memo.
Peer Response Reflection: Eslam Salaheldin Abdelnaser Abdelhafez
I think my response to Eslam was one of the stronger parts of the discussion in theoretical terms. His post usefully brought the BDI model into the conversation and explained beliefs, desires, and intentions in a clear way. My reply worked well because it connected that framework back to KQML and showed how performatives could be interpreted in relation to belief updates, goal adoption, and intention revision. That strengthened the academic side of the discussion and linked the communication-language question to broader agent architecture theory, rather than leaving it at the level of interface comparison.
Even so, this response also shows a tendency I need to improve: I was more comfortable extending the peer’s argument than critically testing it. Eslam’s core point was valuable, but it also rested on an assumption that deserved more scrutiny. The suggestion that KQML is especially effective when all agents are built around BDI-style reasoning makes sense in one respect, but it also narrows the purpose of ACLs too far. ACLs were supposed to support heterogeneous agents, so tying their usefulness too tightly to one architecture risks overlooking that broader goal. I did raise the issue of inconsistent interpretation by non-BDI agents, but I could have pushed further and asked whether this architectural dependency reveals a weakness in the practical portability of ACL semantics.
Summary Post Reflection
The summary post was more disciplined than my initial contribution and it shows a genuine refinement in my thinking. The most obvious improvement is that it corrected the overstatement in my original post about newer natural-language-based approaches. Instead of implying that they had dealt with ACL limitations, the summary recognised that natural-language interaction brings its own ambiguity, context dependence, and interpretation problems. That was an important development, because it showed that I had moved toward a more balanced position. I also think the summary identified the most important issue in the discussion more clearly than the initial post did: a standard message format does not guarantee shared meaning.
Another strength is that the summary brought together the main lines of argument without losing coherence. It connected performatives, interoperability, ontology alignment, BDI, NLP, and the contrast with method invocation in a way that was more focused than the original post. In that sense, it did what a good summary should do: it showed development rather than simply restating earlier points. It also reflected some of the strongest contributions from peers, especially the emphasis on semantic alignment and the architectural relevance of BDI.
If I were revising the summary, I would make the critical thread more explicit. I would argue more directly that KQML remains conceptually valuable because it captures social intent and coordination more naturally than procedural calls, but that its main practical weakness lies in the gap between formal communicative theory and verifiable implementation. I would also state more clearly that modern natural-language-based agent communication does not remove the need for structure; it simply changes the form of the coordination problem. That would make the summary more decisive and would show the progression in my thinking more sharply.
Overall Reflection
Overall, I think this discussion was stronger than my earlier collaborative work because my contributions were more conceptually focused and more grounded in both agent theory and software engineering concerns. The strongest aspect of my participation was the attempt to bridge classical ACL literature with practical questions of interoperability, protocol design, validation, and system structure. That gave my contributions a clearer analytical identity.
The main weakness is that I still tended to strengthen arguments more readily than challenge them. In both peer responses, I identified useful points and extended them productively, but I did not always press hard enough on what was weak, incomplete, or potentially overstated in those arguments. In particular, I could have been more critical about the limits of mental-state semantics, the assumptions built into BDI-based interpretations, and the risk of presenting ACLs and method invocation as more opposed than they really are.
The most important thing I learned from this discussion is that the hard part of agent communication is not simply defining a message format. The real challenge is achieving robust interpretation across autonomous systems without assuming too much shared architecture, shared semantics, or shared context. That is where the discussion became most interesting, and it is also the area where I think my future contributions can become more critical and more rigorous.
